Today we’ll be talking about one of the most common verbs in Spanish. Here we’ll show you how to conjugate The Verb Ser in simple present tense.
This means «to be» and it is often confused with another verb in Spanish that is also equivalent to «to be«, and that is «Estar». But we will talk about that verb in another post.
We use Ser when we want to:
- Tell the time or dates.
- Tell origin (nationality).
- Describe a permanent quality.
- Tell occupation
- Describe characteristics
- Show possession
- Show relationship
Here’s a chart on how to conjugate it in the Simple Present :

| Nosotros somos | We are |
| Ustedes son | You are (plural) |
| Ellos /Ellas son | They are |
Example Sentences:
- Hoy es Martes 24 de Febrero. [Today is Tuesday, February 24th.] (Tell the time or dates)
- Esta mesa es francesa. [This table is french.] (Tell origin or nationality)
- Marco y Luis son hermanos. [Marco and Luis are brothers.] (Describe a permanent quality)
- Nosotros somos albañiles. [We are bricklayers.] (Tell occupation)
- Tú y tu hermana son altas. [You and your sister are tall.] (Describe characteristics)
- Esos son mis zapatos. [Those are my shoes.] (Show possession)
- Martina es mi esposa. [Martina is my wife.] (Show relationship)
