In this post we’ll show you How to Compare in Spanish, remember that comparatives are used to compare two items under a certain trait. The comparison rules in Spanish are quite similar to those in English, but there are certain differences that we must take into account.
One of those differences is that there are no distinctions between short or long adjectives in Spanish, thus all adjectives are treated the same way and follow the same structure when it comes to comparing. That is to say that none of the adjectives will modify their spelling and we only need to add «more» más or «less» menos in front of the adjective in order to make their comparative form. For instance, if you want to say: faster, you’d say: más rápido, and if you want to say: more interesting: you’d say: más interesante. As you can see, there is no such distinction as the one we do have in the English language between a short and a long adjective.
Consequently you can add the word more or less «más» o «menos» to pretty much any adjective except for the irregular adjectives which would be the ones that completely change their spelling: bueno (good) becomes mejor (better) ,and malo (bad) becomes peor (worse). For example, in these cases you can’t say: más mejor or más neither, neither menos mejor or menos peor. Those comparatives would be incorrect because when you use the words mejor and peor they’re already in their comparative form.

Structure of a Comparative Sentence
Object 1 + es/son + más + adjective + que + Object 2
Example:
El auto rojo es más pequeño que el auto azul.
The red car is smaller than the blue car.
Object 1 + es/son + menos + adjective + que + Object
Example:
Una camiseta es menos costosa que un vestido.
A T-shirt is less expensive than a dress.
More Examples:
- Una galleta es menos saludable que una manzana.
- Los panqueques son más blandos que las salchichas.
- Este suéter es más cómodo que esa chaqueta.
- Lucía es más alta que Martha.
- El leopardo es más veloz que la tortuga.
